  • How can we, like Elijah, confront evil?

    God is calling his people to face evil in this world with the truth of Scripture and with boldness. When God made a covenant with Israel on Mount Sinai, he told them to have no false gods.
    In the days of Elijah, the children of Israel went after the false gods. Their sin led to a the prophet Elijah challenges the false prophets (1 Kings 18:15). The same thing happens in our lives, families, churches, and communities. When we make a commitment to live for God, we will face conflict with evil.
    Just like Elijah, God will give each of us power and wisdom through the Holy Spirit to confront whatever evil may stand in opposition to the plan of God.

  • Did Elijah fight with the spirit or flesh?

    The Bible says we don't wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers the rulers of the darkness of this world (Eph. 6:12). The prophet Elijah did not come against the false prophets of Baal with an army and weapons. Instead he relied on the power of Almighty God to show Himself strong and to prove supernaturally that He was in fact the one true God.
    Sometimes when we are confronted with evil in this world, we are tempted to fight it with our own human strength. But Scripture tells us that it is not by might, not by power, but by his spirit that we overcome in this life (Zech. 4:6). The book of Revelation declares that believers overcame the devil by the blood of the lamb, by the word of their testimony, loving not their life, even unto death (Rev. 12:11).
    So when we confront evil in our lives, families, churches, or communities, we need to do so first in the spirit through prayer and through declaring the truth of the Word of God. If we will put our trust in the Lord first and not rely on our own strength or understanding, God will come through to uphold his word and to protect his people (Prov. 3:5-6).

  • Did Elijah seek revenge on Ahab and Jezebel?

    No. Scriptures tells us that when the enemy comes in like a flood God will lift up a standard against him (Is. 59:19). God raised up Elijah, one of the most powerful prophets of the Old Testament to confront two of the most wicked rulers in Israel’s history, Ahab and Jezebel.
    The Bible teaches us that God will not be mocked; whatsoever a person so was they will also reap (Gal. 6:7). Ahab and Jezebel not only rejected God, but they encouraged and promoted idolatry throughout the land. While Jezebel was thoroughly corrupt, Ahab showed that he had tenderness still in his heart toward the one true God. Because of this, God showed him mercy, despite Ahab propensity to sin and to listen to his unbelieving spouse.
    However we see in the case of Ahab, that God's mercy toward him was only extended until he stopped obeying the clear direction that God had given him through his prophets. When that happened and he overtly disobeyed, the judgment of God came to his life and he died a violent death in fulfillment of the words of the prophet. Likewise, Jezebel also died violently, exactly as the prophet had foretold. When we are confronted with those who do evil and who fight against the God of the Bible, we may be tempted to allow hatred and ‘unforgiveness’ to rise up in our hearts.
    But Jesus made it clear that we are to love our enemies, do ‘good’ to those who persecute us, and pray for those who treat us poorly (Matt. 5:44). Perhaps by showing love to people like this, they will have a change of heart and turn to God for salvation. It is not for us as human beings to pass judgment, but instead to intercede for those who do not know the Lord that their eyes would be open (Luke 6:28). Scripture clearly says, “Judgment is mine says the Lord. I will repay" (Rom. 12:19). Those who sow violence and hatred, unless they repent and turn from their wicked ways, will reap a tragic harvest (Gal. 6:7). Scripture says that God does not wish that any would perish, but that all would come to salvation (2 Pet. 3:9). So it's our responsibility to pray that God would be merciful to those who oppose Him in this life.

  • How do we stay hopeful, like Elijah, when we don't see the rain?

    We can stay hopeful if, like Elijah, we focus on God and his promises. Altough the dought continued Elijah said to Ahab, “Go get something to eat and drink, for I hear a mighty rainstorm coming!”
    There were no visiual signs of God's provision but Elijah simply went to the top of Mount Carmel and bowed low to the ground. He prayed with his face between his knees.
    Elijah told Ahab to go and look to the sea. Time after time, the servant returned and said 'I don't see anything.'
    Seven times Elijah told him to go and look. Finally the seventh time, his servant told him, “I saw a little cloud about the size of a man’s hand rising from the sea.”
    And soon the sky was black with clouds.

  • Should we boast in the Lord or Ourselves?

    If you want to boast you should only boast in the Lord. (1 Corinthians 1:31) When Elijah met the 450 prophets of Baal he told them, “You go first, for there are many of you. Choose one of the bulls, and prepare it and call on the name of your god. But do not set fire to the wood.”
    They tried to call on the name of Baal from morning until noontime, shouting, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no reply of any kind. Then they danced, hobbling around the altar they had made. About noontime Elijah began mocking them. “You’ll have to shout louder,” he scoffed, “for surely he is a god! Perhaps he is daydreaming!”
    Later, Elijah called to the people, “Come over here!” They all crowded around him as he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been torn down. And then with boldness, Elijah prayed “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, prove today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant. Prove that I have done all this at your command. O Lord, answer me! Answer me so these people will know that you, O Lord, are God and that you have brought them back to yourself.” (1 Kings 18:37)
